About

First Class Airfare

Welcome to First Class Airfare. This is a show and online archive based out of Reed College, broadcasting on KRRC, our online radio station, here.

First Class Airfare puts together playlists around musical and spacial themes, including themes such as 'Rock en Español', 'Guitar around the world', 'Boleros en la Luna', 'Hopping Back and Forth across the Pond: Post-genre in NYC, London, and Beyond', and 'African Jazz'. Whether these are themes or places which you are comfortable with or ones which have never graced your ears and eyes, keep your ears open and your seat-backs and tray-tables in their upright and locked position.

This project comes from my interest in both cultural journalism and what one could call the academic side of those same ideas, namely Cultural/Material Studies, including Ethnomusicology, Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies, Anthropology, and Linguistics. Here, I explore music histories and global sonic transmission routes and systems.
I put together playlists in the hope to place music in conversation with itself as cultural text. This includes questions like: How does music engage in and complicate community and identity making? What power does music have? For who?
